The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the selection of former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, as the running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, following what the party described as extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.
According to the statement, Amaechi’s emergence as the vice-presidential candidate followed the successful conclusion of the ADC presidential primaries, where he finished as runner-up and secured significant support from delegates and party members across the federation.
The party described the Atiku-Amaechi partnership as the coming together of two experienced statesmen capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic, security, and governance challenges.
Highlighting Amaechi’s credentials, the ADC noted that he possesses one of the most extensive public service records in Nigeria’s democratic history. He served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, making him one of the longest-serving legislative leaders in the Fourth Republic, before completing two terms as Governor of Rivers State.
The statement added that Amaechi’s tenure as governor was marked by investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public sector reforms. At the national level, he later served as Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw major rail and transportation modernization projects.
The ADC said Amaechi’s experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government would provide valuable support to a future ADC administration.
The party also stressed that Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria, coupled with his reputation as a reform-minded administrator and coalition builder, would strengthen the ticket’s national appeal.
According to the ADC, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents a broad national alliance that bridges regional, generational, and political divides while offering Nigerians a credible alternative focused on economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity.
The party expressed confidence that the partnership would energise its growing coalition and inspire hope among Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ADC subsequently called on party members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, and Nigerians of goodwill to support its campaign as it seeks to build what it described as a stronger, safer, and more prosperous nation.
