Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu by Cardinal John Onaiyekan, describing the former Archbishop of Abuja as a partisan figure whose political preferences are well known.

Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said Onaiyekan’s comments about the Tinubu administration should be viewed in the context of the cardinal’s perceived political alignment.

His remarks followed comments by Onaiyekan after a recent meeting between President Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). The cardinal had said the bishops told the president that Nigerians were facing severe economic hardship and that the country was “bleeding.”

Reacting, Wike said it was misleading to portray Onaiyekan as politically neutral.

“We all know where Cardinal Onaiyekan stands. His position is not hidden. We know who he supports,” Wike said, adding that many prominent figures openly aligned with political interests during the 2023 elections.

The minister stressed that he was not opposed to constructive criticism of government, noting that such feedback helps leaders identify areas requiring improvement. However, he urged religious leaders to remain balanced and avoid giving the impression that they oppose government regardless of its actions.

According to him, criticism should acknowledge achievements where they exist while pointing out areas that need attention.

“If all your comments are negative all the time, government will naturally begin to question your motives,” Wike said.

He maintained that religious and community leaders would command greater credibility if they combined honest criticism with recognition of policies and programmes that have delivered positive results.
