The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced plans to construct more modern bus and taxi terminals across Abuja as part of efforts to eliminate illegal motor parks, improve passenger safety and modernise the nation’s capital.

The Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Transportation Secretariat, Chinedum Elechi, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists on the operationalisation of the Mabushi and Central Business District bus and taxi terminals.

Elechi said the administration, under the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, is committed to transforming Abuja into a world-class city through sustained investments in transport infrastructure.

He explained that the new terminals would replace informal loading points such as Berger and Area 1 roundabouts, noting that centralised transport hubs would enhance security, improve orderliness and curb crimes such as “one chance” robberies.

According to him, the Mabushi and Kugbo terminals are dedicated to intercity travel, providing passengers heading to destinations such as Aba, Lokoja, Owerri and Sokoto with safe and comfortable boarding facilities, while the Central Business District terminal is designed mainly for intracity transportation.

Elechi added that additional terminals have already been included in the administration’s expansion plans and would be delivered through future budgetary provisions.

Drawing comparisons with successful urban transport reforms elsewhere, he said Abuja could replicate Lagos’ transformation of Oshodi into a modern transport hub.

He explained that the terminals would operate as primary transport hubs connected to passengers’ final destinations through structured last-mile services, including buses, taxis and e-hailing platforms.

Elechi urged transport operators and commuters to embrace the new facilities, stressing that the initiative is aimed at improving public safety, maintaining a cleaner city and creating a more efficient and reliable transportation system across the Federal Capital Territory.
