Ghana sends 120 Nigerians home after cybercrime raid

Ghana has repatriated 120 Nigerian nationals allegedly trafficked to the country and forced to participate in cybercrime operations following a multinational security operation.

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, announced the development on Tuesday, October 14, in a post on X, thanking the Ghana Air Force and Ministry of Defence for facilitating the repatriation.

The operation, codenamed Operation Cyberhunt, was led by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with intelligence and security agencies in Ghana, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to George, the operation led to the rescue of the 120 Nigerians, who were allegedly trafficked to Ghana and compelled to work in cybercrime establishments.

Security operatives recovered 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, internet connectivity devices and four vehicles during the operation. One of the vehicles was reportedly stolen from Canada.

Other items recovered included digital equipment, valuable jewellery and 10 Nigerian passports.

George disclosed that eight additional individuals were being processed for prosecution as investigations continued.

He commended the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for their roles in facilitating the return of the Nigerian nationals.

The minister also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to tackling cybercrime, declaring that the country would not serve as a safe haven for cybercriminals under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

The operation highlights growing regional and international cooperation among security agencies to combat cybercrime, human trafficking and organised criminal networks operating across national borders.
