Power generation crashes to 476MW, disrupts electricity supply

Nigeria’s electricity generation plunged by 87.6 per cent on Monday, October 19, 2026, triggering power supply disruptions in parts of the country.

Data published on the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) portal showed that electricity generation fell from 3,840 megawatts (MW) at 7am to 476.70MW by 1pm.

The decline represented a loss of 3,363.30MW within six hours, significantly reducing the amount of electricity available for distribution across the country.

According to the data, the sharp drop in generation began at about 12:40pm, coinciding with reports of electricity outages in some areas.

The development is expected to worsen power supply challenges for households and businesses already grappling with unreliable electricity.

However, details surrounding the cause of the sudden decline in generation were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.

Further updates are expected as more information emerges from the relevant power sector authorities.
