Nigeria has no active ebola case, says WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the evacuation of the index patient and her husband to Switzerland.

Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Monday, noting that the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical personnel successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness.

“Both the patient and her husband are Swiss citizens,” Janabi said.

He commended the Nigerian medical team for stabilising the patient before her evacuation for further treatment in Switzerland.

Despite the development, Janabi stressed that vigilance remained critical, adding that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case, while Swiss authorities would take responsibility for the patient’s continued treatment and monitoring her husband, identified as contact number 53.

He also praised the Nigerian government, health workers, clinicians and emergency responders for their efforts in managing the case.

Earlier on Monday, the 42-year-old woman, who tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease, was evacuated aboard a medical aircraft from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 6am.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, confirmed the evacuation, adding that the woman’s husband remained asymptomatic.
