‘I’m not a member of your party’: Ochefu rejects NDC campaign council appointment

Professor Yakubu Ochefu has rejected his inclusion in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Campaign Council, saying he is neither a member of the party nor consulted before his name was listed.

Ochefu, a Professor of Economic History and Strategic Studies at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, said he had formally written to the council’s chairman to decline the appointment and requested that his name be removed from the list.

In a statement he personally signed, the university don said the list circulating on social media wrongly presented him as a member of the party’s National Campaign Council.

“I wish to inform the public that I am not a member of the NDC and have never been. I was not consulted before my name was included, nor did I give consent,” he said.

Ochefu, who chairs the Association of Nigerian Universities Alumni (ANUA) and serves as President-General of Ochetoha K’Idoma, explained that his leadership roles required him to remain politically neutral.

According to him, both organisations have members affiliated with different political parties, making non-partisanship essential to his responsibilities.

“These offices require me to remain non-partisan, and I intend to honour that obligation,” he said.

He thanked those who contacted him for clarification and urged the public to disregard the campaign council list insofar as it concerned him.
