AFCON: Ndidi offers to pay teammates’ bonuses ahead of Algeria clash

Super Eagles captain, Wilfred Ndidi, has pledged to personally settle the unpaid match bonuses of players and officials at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco should the Federal Government fail to do so before Saturday’s quarter-final clash against Algeria.

Ndidi made the commitment amid concerns that the lingering bonus issue could disrupt the team’s focus and preparations. He was quoted by BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji as saying he had encouraged his teammates to continue training and remain committed to the tournament, despite the uncertainty surrounding their entitlements.

“I’ve been pushing the team to train and focus on the game against Algeria since our second match,” Ndidi said. “I’ve now assured the players and officials that I’ll personally pay the bonuses if the authorities don’t settle them before Saturday. I don’t want this issue to affect our preparations.”

Reports had earlier emerged that some players and officials were considering boycotting training and travel to Marrakech over unpaid bonuses from the group stage and the round of 16.

In response, the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, announced that the Federal Government had released the group stage bonuses and streamlined the foreign exchange process to ensure quicker payments going forward. She disclosed that final transfers to players’ domiciliary accounts were already underway and expected to reflect within Thursday or Friday.

The Super Eagles arrived in Marrakech on Thursday and resumed training ahead of the crucial encounter with Algeria, as Nigeria continues its quest for a fourth AFCON title after previous wins in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
