Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reiterated strong legislative and political support for the proposed creation of Anioma State, stating that the initiative remains a priority under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, Akpabio assured party members that the National Assembly is committed to advancing the proposal.
He explained that if Anioma State is created, Asaba will serve as its capital, while Warri will become the capital of a restructured Delta State. According to him, Warri already possesses the infrastructure needed for a state capital, including an airport, seaport, government institutions, and key oil industry assets.
Akpabio described the demand for Anioma State as a long-standing and justified aspiration, rooted in the need for equity, administrative convenience, and balanced regional development. He noted that the proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, has gained significant traction within the 10th Senate.
He added that the creation of Anioma State would enhance governance, promote decentralisation, and unlock socio-economic opportunities for the people.
“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio said, expressing confidence in its eventual realization.
The Senate President also called for unity among stakeholders in the South-South region and urged continued support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing its role in driving national growth and integration.
Several governors from the region, along with political leaders and party stakeholders, attended the congress, underscoring the growing political backing for the proposal.
