The media office of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised presidential aide Daniel Bwala, accusing him of attempting to push a fabricated claim that his life was under threat from allies of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement on Saturday, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, alleged that Bwala had previously approached the Atiku media team asking them to release a statement claiming the president and his associates were threatening him.
Shaibu said the request was rejected, describing it as a “frivolous and opportunistic attempt at political theatre.”
The accusation follows Bwala’s recent interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan on Al Jazeera, which has sparked widespread political debate.
While Bwala described the interview as a demonstration of intellectual courage, the Atiku camp argued it exposed contradictions between his past criticism of the candidate Tinubu and his current defence of Tinubu’s administration.
Shaibu also faulted Bwala’s remarks on insecurity in the country, saying dismissing the loss of lives as mere politics was insensitive.
The statement further mocked Bwala’s role in the presidency, claiming his efforts to defend the administration had instead raised more questions about its credibility. The Atiku camp added that Bwala could not rewrite his political history through rhetoric, insisting that “history keeps receipts.”
