AU summit: Nigeria secures permanent seat on African Central Bank board

Nigeria has recorded major diplomatic and institutional gains at the 39th Session of the Executive Council of the , securing a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank.

The development was announced in a press statement issued by the on Thursday. According to the statement, the decision underscores Nigeria’s strategic role in shaping Africa’s emerging financial and monetary architecture.

The approval also extends Nigeria’s representation to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the , the body serving as a precursor to the African Central Bank. Officials said the outcome affirms Nigeria’s technical capacity, economic importance, and commitment to advancing monetary integration on the continent.

On peace and security, the Executive Council session also saw the successful election of candidates jointly endorsed by the to the Peace and Security Council of the African Union. The result was described as a reflection of regional unity and a shared commitment to stability and collective security across Africa.

Nigeria also used the platform to demonstrate leadership in democratic governance by organising a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The event attracted ministers, senior government officials, and delegates from across Africa and the international community, and focused on strengthening democratic institutions, inclusive governance, and regional cooperation.

The Federal Government said Nigeria’s engagements and outcomes at the session reaffirm its commitment to the core objectives of the African Union, including economic integration, institutional development, peace, security, and democratic governance.
