Breaking: Senate approves emergency rule in Rivers

The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, granting him authority to enforce emergency measures for six months.

This decision was made after a closed-door session on Thursday, which lasted over an hour.

According to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Senate relied on its Orders 133, 134, 135, and 136 to pass the proclamation.

The approval also mandates a joint committee of both chambers to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State during the emergency period.

Additionally, the Senate has resolved to establish a mediation committee consisting of eminent Nigerians to help resolve the state’s political crisis.

This development follows President Tinubu’s suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly, with Vice-Admiral Iboete Iba appointed as the Administrator to administer the state.
