An unidentified woman and her daughter, age two, have been crushed to death on Thursday by a bus in Ikotun, Lagos state.
According to reports, the bus crashed into some shops on the side of the road in front of Toluwalase Hall on Governor’s Road in Ikotun, injuring another vendor.
A witness identified simply as Tayo claimed that the bus driver fled after being nearly lynched by onlookers who gathered at the scene of the tragic incident.
The witness explained that the bus in question was a Hummer Bus that most likely lost its brake and about five shops were cleared after it crashed into the stores. He added that the mom and her daughter, who were crushed by the bus were confirmed dead after they were rushed to the hospital.
A different witness said that the woman died while attempting to save her child.
Sadly, the bus crushed the two of them as she hurried to save her daughter. When people surrounded the driver, he fled, the source said.
The bus was reportedly spotted around a gutter next to the road and crossing it.
Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer at Ikotun, Adagba Johnson, said that he knew about the incident and officers were already at the scene.
Meanwhile, a different source claimed that the officers pursued the allegedly eluding driver.
The source stated, “I think the driver is inside the police van,” as a police van rushed past the scene.
Babatunde Farinloye, the Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, also acknowledged the incident.
He noted that his men were on ground and will give more details subsequently.
