Disu to be sworn in Wednesday as IGP after council confirmation

President Bola Tinubu will swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Wednesday, following his unanimous endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the swearing-in will occur during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day.

The council meeting, presided over by Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions. Key federal officials, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, were also present.

Several state governors praised Disu’s career record. Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted Disu’s achievements as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad between 2015 and 2021. Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also lauded his professionalism, noting his previous service in Rivers State and as FCT Police Commissioner. Enugu Governor Peter Mbah seconded the endorsement.

Disu, 59, born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent. He holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship, reflecting a commitment to knowledge-driven, modern policing.

Before his confirmation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos. He also worked closely with Tinubu during the latter’s tenure as Lagos State Governor, serving as Aide-de-Camp while Egbetokun was Chief Security Officer.

Disu’s confirmation comes just a week after his appointment as Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
