EFCC traces ₦212.9bn worth of properties to ex-attorney-general Abubakar Malami

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced 41 properties to Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial crimes.

The assets—comprising hotels, residential buildings, parcels of land, schools, factories and a printing press—are located across Kebbi State, Kano State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The combined estimated value of the properties is put at N212.89 billion.

According to findings, properties linked to Malami in Kebbi State are valued at N162.19 billion, those in Kano State at N16.01 billion, while assets in the FCT are estimated at N34.69 billion.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has filed a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering against Malami and his son, Abdulaziz Malami. The charges are said to be in violation of Sections 15, 18 and 21 of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.

Kebbi State Properties

Total value: N162,195,950,000

Key assets include multiple sites of Rayhaan University, primary and secondary schools, agro-allied factory buildings and machinery, staff quarters, a printing press, radio station, hotels, residential buildings, oil and gas facilities, and properties linked to foundations and support organisations associated with Malami and his family.

Kano State Properties

Total value: N16,011,800,000

Assets traced to Kano include Zeennoor Hotel and Mosque, Rayhaan Hotel and Gym, as well as a residential property reportedly belonging to Malami’s wife along Ahmadu Bello Way.

FCT, Abuja Properties

Total value: N34,685,000,000

Properties in Abuja include luxury duplexes in Maitama, branches of Meethaq Hotel in Jabi and Maitama, multiple bungalow units at Efab Estate, and Harmonia Hotels in Area 11, Garki.

Investigations are ongoing as the EFCC continues efforts to recover proceeds of alleged financial crimes and prosecute those found culpable.
