The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly resigned from office following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
Sources said the directive was conveyed during a meeting between the President and Egbetokun at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, February 23, 2026.
He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, currently an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG).
Although no official announcement has been made, insiders disclosed that arrangements for a formal handover are already in progress. As of the time of filing this report, neither the Presidency nor the Nigeria Police Force had issued a statement confirming the development. However, a formal announcement is anticipated later on Tuesday.
Egbetokun was appointed the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, and his position was substantively confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.
He was initially scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, the National Assembly amended the Police Act to allow an Inspector-General to serve a fixed four-year term unless removed by the President.
Following the amendment, Egbetokun was projected to remain in office until October 31, 2027 — a development that sparked public debate and criticism. The Presidency had consistently maintained that his continued tenure was lawful under the revised law.
