Eight people, all male students of the University of Jos, have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a trailer and a passenger bus along Zaria Road, opposite Unity Bank, in Jos, Plateau State.
The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, involved a bus carrying eleven students. Eyewitnesses said seven of the occupants died at the scene, while another victim later passed away in the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to eight. The remaining three injured students are currently receiving treatment.
FRSC spokesperson Peter Longsan confirmed the incident, stating that the command received a distress call at about 2:30 a.m. and immediately deployed rescue personnel.
“On arrival, seven people were suspected to be dead on the spot and were later certified dead by a doctor. Another victim died in the hospital, bringing the total number of deceased to eight. Three others are currently receiving treatment. All victims were males,” he said.
Reacting to the incident, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Plateau State, Olajide Mogaji, cautioned motorists against night-time travel, excessive speeding, dangerous driving, drunk driving, and embarking on trips while fatigued—factors he described as leading causes of fatal road crashes.
“The government needs you alive and wants you to enjoy life to the fullest this festive season and beyond,” he said.
He also encouraged the public to promptly report road emergencies by calling the FRSC toll-free number 122.
