Military investigators are currently interrogating a Managing Director of a Federal Government agency in the South-South region in connection with an alleged plot to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
According to intelligence sources, the official was taken into custody for allegedly authorizing a significant transfer of funds to a former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva. Investigators have identified Sylva as a suspected financier of the alleged scheme to forcibly change the government.
It is believed the transferred money was intended to bankroll the plot. The Managing Director is now being questioned about the purpose of the substantial financial transfer.
In a related development, the Abuja residence of the former minister and All Progressives Congress chieftain was raided this past Saturday. During the operation, military operatives arrested Sylva’s younger brother, who serves as his Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs, and also took his driver into custody.
Sylva was out of the country at the time of the raid. Sources indicate he was preparing to return to Nigeria but suspended his travel plans after learning that individuals linked to the alleged coup had been arrested.
Earlier this month, defence officials confirmed the detention of 16 military officers for breaches of service regulations and acts of indiscipline, attributing their grievances largely to perceived career stagnation.
However, other reports have alleged that the detained officers, who range in rank from Captain to Brigadier General, were actually arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency for their suspected involvement in a plot to overthrow the government. These reports claim the officers were apprehended at their homes across the country.
