Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, police have confirmed, as officers carry out searches at multiple properties linked to him.
Thames Valley Police said officers are conducting searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk, including the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, where Andrew lived until recently. Images circulating earlier showed vehicles believed to be police cars arriving at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
The arrest follows confirmation from Thames Valley Police that they were assessing a complaint concerning the alleged sharing of confidential material by Andrew with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the nature of the material in question.
Andrew, who turns 66 today, has previously denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. He has not responded to requests for comment regarding the specific allegations tied to the release of millions of Epstein-related files in January.
In a statement released shortly after news of the arrest broke, King Charles III said he had learned of the development “with the deepest concern.”
“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” the King said.
“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.
“In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.
“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.
“As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter.
“Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
Police say investigations are ongoing.
