A tragic early-morning accident along Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of a father, mother, and their young child.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the crash involved an Audi, a Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Corolla. According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the accident was triggered when a speeding, heavily loaded truck rammed into one of the vehicles from behind.
The impact caused the struck car to lose control and collide with two others, resulting in a deadly chain reaction. The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Emergency responders, including LASTMA officials, worked quickly to rescue trapped victims and clear the road. Two survivors with severe injuries were taken by LASAMBUS to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate.
The bodies of the deceased family were handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for evacuation, while officers from the Isheri Olowora Police Division supported the operation.
The coordinated response involved LASTMA, FRSC, LASEMA, LASAMBUS, SEHMU, and the Lagos Fire & Rescue Service. All damaged vehicles were towed away to avert further incidents.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the deaths as “an unbearable and irreplaceable loss of an entire family,” praying for the bereaved and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
He regretted that the tragedy was avoidable, noting that excessive speeding — particularly by articulated trucks — remains a major cause of fatal road crashes. Bakare-Oki urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and adopt defensive driving habits, reaffirming LASTMA’s commitment to stronger enforcement and improved road surveillance.
