FCT polls: Wike says voters saw through ‘corn-and-groundnut’ campaign gimmicks

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said the outcome of the just-concluded FCT area council elections shows that residents can clearly distinguish between the ruling party and what he described as the “real opposition.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won five of the six area councils in the polls.

Speaking during a post-election broadcast, Wike said the results exposed politicians who resort to symbolic gestures, such as buying roasted corn and groundnuts from roadside vendors, to create a false impression of closeness to the people.

“The election has further exposed the hypocrisy of people who go about buying corn and groundnuts from roadside sellers for the purpose of a campaign just to deceive Nigerians.”

According to him, FCT residents rejected what he termed “emergency democrats” — politicians who, in his view, refuse to acknowledge progress made by the current administration.
Wike attributed the peaceful conduct and outcome of the elections to the leadership and development drive of President Bola Tinubu.

He said the results reflect confidence in the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda and demonstrate growing optimism among residents about the future of the FCT.

The minister added that the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and living standards in the capital has not gone unnoticed, expressing confidence that the FCT will continue on a path of development and progress under Tinubu’s leadership.
