FG raises new charges against Emefiele, set to drop firearm suit

The Federal Government, on Tuesday, submitted a request to drop the “illegal possession of firearms” lawsuit it had brought against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In an oral motion, Mohammed Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, informed Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State that the application was made in response to the findings of additional investigations.

Emefiele’s attorney, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Joseph Daudu, disagreed with the motion and insisted that the government must first absolve itself of its role in disobeying the court’s decision to grant Emefiele bail before acting on the application.

The application hearing has been adjourned till Thursday, August 17, 2023 by Justice Oweibo.

The DPP told reporters that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has received a new 20 counts.

He claimed that one of the accusations against Emefiele was offering improper advantages.
