Finally, court sets date for judgment in Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled November 20, 2025, to deliver judgment in the terrorism case involving the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date on Friday after formally closing Kanu’s defence. The decision followed the IPOB leader’s refusal to present his case, insisting that he would not proceed under what he described as a repealed legal framework.

The judge noted that the court had provided ample opportunity for Kanu to defend himself, in line with Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution on fair hearing. According to him, the defendant’s continued refusal to engage amounted to a deliberate waiver of his right to be heard.

“This court has given opportunity to the defendant as required by the constitution, and I will not allow this to continue,” Justice Omotosho ruled. “It is on this basis, without hesitation, that I say the defendant has waived his right.”

The long-running case, centred on allegations of terrorism and incitement, is expected to reach a critical legal turning point when the court delivers its judgment later this month.
