The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that emergency response operations are ongoing following a fire incident at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
In an official update, FAAN disclosed that coordinated firefighting, rescue, and safety teams remain actively engaged in containment and recovery efforts at the affected facility, including the Control Tower.
According to the authority, a crane was successfully deployed to support rescue operations at the Control Tower, leading to the safe evacuation of all fourteen persons who were initially trapped inside the structure.
Six casualties — three males and three females — were recorded in the incident. FAAN stated that all affected individuals are in stable condition. One person has been transferred to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further medical evaluation and remains stable.
As a precautionary measure, the sixth floor of the affected facility has been fully evacuated to facilitate ongoing emergency operations and risk mitigation efforts.
Preliminary findings by the Fire Service indicate that the blaze originated from the server room on the first floor of Terminal 1. While the fire in the departure hall has been largely brought under control, emergency responders continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any spread to adjoining sections of the terminal.
In line with established safety protocols, the airspace has been temporarily closed. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is working to establish a temporary Control Tower to enable the safe and timely restoration of airport operations.
FAAN assured the public that all emergency procedures were promptly activated and that it is collaborating with relevant emergency and support agencies to safeguard lives, infrastructure, and operational integrity.
The authority added that further verified updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.
