Flash: China slams Trump’s threat to sanction Nigeria over alleged Christian persecution

China has strongly criticized former United States President Donald Trump’s reported warning to cut aid and possibly take military action against Nigeria over claims that Christians are being systematically targeted in the country.

Trump had said he designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” due to what he described as an existential threat facing Christianity. He warned that Washington would “immediately cut off all assistance” to Nigeria and consider military operations if the alleged killings continue.

Beijing, however, condemned the remarks, warning against using religion and human rights as tools for interference. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China stands firmly with Nigeria as a comprehensive strategic partner and supports the country in pursuing development based on its own national realities.

“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Trump’s assertions, insisting that his claims do not reflect the true picture in the country and emphasizing the government’s ongoing commitment to protect all citizens regardless of faith.

The diplomatic reactions add international weight to a debate that continues to spark concern in global political circles.
