Flash: Tinubu mourns Buhari’s death, sends Shettima to UK to escort remains

President Bola Tinubu has announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, at about 4:30 p.m. following a prolonged illness.

Newspread sources say the Buhari died of leukemia, cancer of the blood.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his predecessor and extended condolences to the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, with whom he personally spoke.

As part of official arrangements, Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late President’s body back to Nigeria.

Buhari, a two-time elected President, served from 2015 to 2023. He had previously led Nigeria as military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.

In honour of the late leader, President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-staff across the country.

Further details on funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
