Ebere Okonkwo, husband of one Amaka Okonkwo, a landlady who mixed hot water and pepper to pour on her tenant, has distanced himself from his wife’s actions.
It was gathered that the tenant, Imaobong William and her landlady had a disagreement on Thursday, over increment in rent and the irate landlady assaulted the tenant at her residence in Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The victim was rushed to Zion Hospital, Nawfia by women in the community, who also arrested the suspect promptly and handed her over to Police at the Nimo police station, where she is currently being detained.
Mr Okonkwo who on Saturday, paid a condolence visit to the victim at the hospital where she is receiving treatment, distanced himself from his wife action.
He said: “Yes, I was at home during the incident but I was not aware of my wife’s ill intention towards our tenant. Neither do I support her actions.”
The victim, an Akwa Ibom State indigene while speaking from her hospital bed explained that she and her landlady had a disagreement over her inability to pay the new rent rate, after her tenancy expired in July.
She said: “I requested more time from my landlady to enable me to get a new place, but unfortunately while I was washing my clothes on Thursday, my landlady poured hot water mixed with pepper on me from behind.”
The women in the community led by the Woman President-General of the community, Chiegbunam Nwosu and Florence Okoye, visited the Nimo Police Division to express their displeasure and appeal justice is served.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) who assured them that the victim will get justice, added that, the case will be transferred to the state CID for onward investigation and possible prosecution.
