‘I can’t wait to receive the trophy in Abuja’ – Tinubu hails Super Falcons WAFCON triumph

President Bola Tinubu has expressed immense joy and national pride following the Super Falcons’ remarkable victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their 10th continental title as a triumph for all Nigerians.

Speaking in a post-match video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, her teammates, and Nigerian football officials, President Tinubu applauded the Falcons for lifting the spirits of the nation with their hard-fought 3–2 comeback win over host nation Morocco in Rabat.

“I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you,” the President declared. “You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation, and we are all very happy. You will be celebrated.”

The President extended his appreciation to the technical crew, team management, and government officials who supported the Falcons throughout their campaign. He gave special recognition to Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament, lauding her leadership on and off the pitch.

President Tinubu also commended striker Esther Okoronkwo for her courage and composure under pressure, especially for converting a decisive penalty in the 64th minute that triggered Nigeria’s comeback. He noted her crucial role in creating the second goal and delivering the free-kick that led to Jennifer Echegini’s winning strike.

“That penalty was very courageous,” the President remarked with a smile.

As the call came to a close, the President wished the players and officials a safe journey home, urging them to savour the victory while remaining injury-free.

“Safe journey home. Enjoy yourselves. Avoid injuries. God bless you all,” he said.

Captain Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the team, thanked the President for his unwavering support and for ensuring the full payment of players’ allowances. She assured him that the team was eager to present the WAFCON trophy to him in Abuja.

The joyful exchange concluded with the players and officials breaking into a rousing rendition of the national anthem, followed by three thunderous “Gbosa!” cheers in honour of the President.
