ICYMI: Nigerian mother dies in UK shortly after arriving for son’s graduation

In case you missed it, a Nigerian woman, Oluranti Akinyemi, has died in the United Kingdom shortly after arriving to attend her son’s graduation ceremony.

A fundraising campaign on JustGiving has been launched to raise £20,000 to repatriate her remains to Nigeria and cover related expenses. As of Wednesday, £2,087 had been raised from 97 donors. Adekunle Ogundana, who posted the appeal, said the funds would be used for her repatriation and funeral arrangements.

“Help us bring our sister, mother, friend, and beloved home, Mrs. Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi (née Oluwalana/Ogundana),” he wrote.

According to the appeal, Akinyemi travelled to the UK on February 11 for her son’s graduation, scheduled for February 18, but suffered a cardiac arrest less than 20 hours after arrival. She was rushed to Luton and Dunstable Hospital and placed on life support. After three days, she was declared clinically dead on February 14, 2026.

Akinyemi, believed to be a mother of four, left behind her family, who described her sudden death as devastating. The fundraising campaign aims to cover the costs of repatriation, outstanding medical bills in the UK, and funeral expenses.

Following the incident, social media users advised families to take health precautions when elderly relatives travel abroad, including staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol and caffeine, moving around during long flights, and using compression socks to aid circulation.

The incident highlights growing concern over travel-related health emergencies among Nigerians visiting the UK, amid similar recent cases involving other citizens.
