I’m moved to tears each time I reflect on Fubara’s ‘betrayal’ – Wike

In a heartfelt media chat on Monday, Nyesom Wike, the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), expressed deep emotional turmoil over what he described as a “betrayal” by Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers state. Wike revealed that he is often moved to tears when reflecting on their fraught relationship, which has soured significantly since 2023.

Wike lamented how Fubara, whom he helped rise to power, has become a “tool” for those seeking to undermine him. He drew a poignant analogy, comparing Fubara’s actions to that of a son who conspires with armed robbers against his own father. “This is somebody who brought you, gave you food and everything,” Wike stated, emphasizing the depth of his disappointment and sadness.

The FCT minister remarked that the resolution of the ongoing crisis in Rivers state hinge on Fubara’s willingness to engage in genuine peace talks. “Sometimes, when I go back in my quiet moment, I play the video of the speeches of the governor — what he said and did to me, I weep. Was it necessary?” he questioned, underscoring the personal toll of the betrayal.

Wike acknowledged the frustration of those calling for peace, indicating that reconciliation requires sincerity from Fubara. “How will you feel?” he posed, echoing the pain of betrayal that many can relate to. He warned others who may not understand betrayal to prepare for the possibility of experiencing it themselves.

The political conflict between Wike and Fubara has escalated, leading to a significant divide within the Rivers state house of assembly and multiple legal disputes. On March 18, President Bola Tinubu intervened by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers, suspending Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly for an initial six-month period. A retired naval chief, Ibok-Ete Ibas, was appointed as the state’s sole administrator in an effort to stabilize the situation.

In a passionate plea for peace, Wike reiterated that while he is open to reconciliation, he expects that any efforts towards peace must be genuine and rooted in accountability.
