INEC rejects Senator Natsha’s recall petition, citing constitutional requirements

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, due to failure to meet constitutional requirements.

The petition, submitted by some constituents on March 24, had over 250,000 signatures, but lacked essential contact details.

According to INEC, the petitioners failed to fulfill the conditions outlined in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Charity Omole, a representative of the constituents, claimed they submitted the petition due to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, leaving the constituency without representation.

Key Issues with the Petition:

  • Lack of contact details: INEC stated that the petitioners did not provide their contact information.
  • Constitutional requirements: The petition failed to meet the conditions outlined in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused INEC of bias, alleging that the electoral body aided the petitioners in perfecting their petition. However, INEC maintains that the petition did not meet the necessary constitutional requirements.
