Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dramatically declared his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), cementing weeks of speculation over his next political move as the 2027 election cycle gains momentum.
Atiku announced the switch on Monday via his X handle, sharing a photo of himself holding his freshly issued ADC membership card with the caption, “It’s official.” The post instantly ignited political chatter nationwide.
His defection comes months after he walked away from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, following a prolonged internal crisis that fractured the party’s unity. Atiku’s exit occurred barely two weeks after a coalition of opposition figures endorsed the ADC as their new platform for the 2027 presidential race.
In his resignation letter dated July 16 and addressed to his PDP ward chairman in Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a departure of the party from its foundational ideals as key reasons for abandoning the platform he once helped shape.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he said, expressing gratitude for the support he received over the years while wishing the party well.
With his move to the ADC now official, Atiku has positioned himself at the centre of a fast-evolving opposition realignment—setting the stage for one of Nigeria’s most consequential political battles in the run-up to 2027.
