Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticized the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials, stating that it tarnishes Nigeria’s reputation.
Jonathan expressed his disappointment while speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday.
He emphasized that the actions of key government actors paint the country in a negative light, particularly when it comes to the international community’s perception of Nigeria’s democracy.
Jonathan noted that the image of the country and its attractiveness to investors are heavily influenced by the actions of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
In contrast, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has backed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers, arguing that a responsible government must take decisive action to protect its citizens.
NNPP National Chairman Dr. Agbo Major defended the president’s decision, citing the need for swift action in the face of a deepening crisis.
However, Jonathan’s comments highlight the concerns surrounding the suspension of elected officials and the potential damage to Nigeria’s democratic image.
His remarks also underscore the importance of upholding the principles of democracy and the rule of law in the country.
