Governor Caleb Mutfwang has convened an emergency security council meeting following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North LGA of Plateau State, which claimed 28 lives.
The attack, carried out by suspected bandits on Sunday evening, targeted a popular bar in the community, leaving several others injured. While initial police reports confirmed 12 deaths, the governor later disclosed that the casualty figure had risen to 28.
In response, the state government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North to contain the situation and enable security agencies to carry out operations. Mutfwang, who visited the affected community, described the victims as “law-abiding citizens” and pledged that the state would ensure dignified burials for the deceased.
He also assured residents that those responsible would be brought to justice, revealing that a suspect has already been arrested in connection with the attack.
As part of strengthened security measures, the governor ordered the strict enforcement of a ban on commercial motorcycles (okada) across the state, directing the commissioner of police to issue detailed guidelines.
Mutfwang said the emergency security council meeting would focus on reviewing and reinforcing the state’s security architecture to make it more proactive and responsive to emerging threats.
The governor further disclosed that most of the injured victims receiving treatment at the University Teaching Hospital are in stable condition, adding that the state government will cover their medical expenses.
He extended condolences to families of the victims and urged community leaders, youth groups, and religious stakeholders to support efforts aimed at restoring peace, unity, and stability across Plateau State.
