Sanusi Bature, spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, has alleged that former Kano governor and NNPP chieftain, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is secretly working to advance President Bola Tinubu’s political interests ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday, Bature claimed that while some politicians openly support Tinubu, others are backing him discreetly.
According to him, Kwankwaso’s political moves would ultimately favour Tinubu, just as he allegedly did during the 2023 elections.
“There are those working for Tinubu openly and those doing so behind the scenes. I believe whatever Kwankwaso is doing will benefit Tinubu in the end,” Bature said.
He also dismissed the possibility of a lasting political alliance between Kwankwaso and Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing such a partnership as unsustainable.
Bature argued that the NNPP is no longer strong enough to stand alone ahead of the 2027 elections, adding that key political stakeholders in Kano had identified the APC as the preferred platform for political realignment.
He claimed Kwankwaso initially sought a direct meeting with President Tinubu to discuss political negotiations but later cancelled the appointment, citing a trip to China.
On talks of a possible Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, Bature said he could not see the alliance succeeding in Kano politics.
According to him, Kwankwaso, who secured over one million votes in Kano under the NNPP in 2023, would struggle to repeat such a performance as Obi’s running mate in 2027.
“A Peter Obi-Kwankwaso ticket cannot secure one million votes in Kano,” he said.
