Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has declared that the state does not belong to President Bola Tinubu or his long-standing political structure.
Speaking during a television interview on Sunday, Rhodes-Vivour accused successive Lagos administrations of neglecting quality governance while leaning on “violence and intimidation” to sustain political dominance.
“I don’t believe Lagos belongs to one man. That’s why my entire movement is called Our Lagos. Lagos is our shared responsibility. Lagos is our home. The idea that our commonwealth has been commandeered by one man for over two decades is what I stand firmly against,” he said.
Rhodes-Vivour pointed to neglected infrastructure in areas like Alimosho, where inner roads remain in disrepair. Instead of tackling such pressing issues, he alleged, local government chairmen focus on stopping opposition rallies.
“You have council chairmen driving through terrible roads with policemen, not to fix them, but to prevent other parties from holding meetings. After 20 years, they have not made a real difference to the people they govern,” he lamented.
According to him, the ruling structure’s frequent resort to strong-arm tactics is proof of failure.
“Violence is the last refuge of incompetence,” Rhodes-Vivour said. “If they were truly delivering good governance, they would not be bothered about opposition. Instead, they rely on intimidation, and that alone says everything.”
