Lagos Police chief vows to arrest Sowore, defends ‘wanted’ declaration

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Moshood Jimoh, has reaffirmed his decision to declare activist and politician Omoyele Sowore wanted, asserting he possesses the constitutional authority to do so.

Jimoh, speaking in a television interview, promised to use every legal tool available to apprehend the former presidential candidate. The declaration stems from a protest in the Oworonshoki community against building demolitions, where police fired teargas, leading to injuries and arrests.

The police chief stated that his officers were prepared for Sowore’s arrival in Lagos, emphasizing that it is the police’s duty to prevent crime. He accused Sowore of inciting unrest and obstructing movement on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Jimoh also revealed that despite an agreement for Sowore to present himself for investigation, he had failed to do so. “I have the right to do everything possible within the ambit of the law to ensure public safety,” Jimoh stated.

Furthermore, the Commissioner firmly denied a circulating claim that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had issued a “shoot-on-sight” order against Sowore, labeling the rumor “a great misinformation.”
