Malami alleges security agencies plan rearrest despite court bail

The Office of Abubakar Malami (SAN) has raised alarm over an alleged plan by security agencies to rearrest him immediately after his release from custody, despite being granted bail by a court.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, the office said it had received credible intelligence indicating that government security agencies were preparing to rearrest Malami on what it described as “trumped-up and unrelated charges.”

The statement recalled that a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had earlier granted Malami bail, but alleged that the order was not honoured, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly declined to effect his release.

According to the statement, fresh plans are now allegedly underway to ensure Malami’s continued detention, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) said to have mounted surveillance at the Kuje Correctional Service in anticipation of his release.

The office described the alleged actions as a serious violation of due process and an abuse of state power, warning that they undermine judicial authority and public confidence in the justice system.

It also expressed concern over the safety of Malami, his family and staff, stressing that any act of intimidation, unlawful detention or harm should be fully accounted for by those responsible.

The statement maintained that Malami remains committed to submitting himself to lawful judicial processes and called on relevant authorities, the legal community, civil society groups and the international community to closely monitor the situation and ensure that security agencies act within the confines of the law.

The office said it would provide further updates as events unfold.
