Man arrested for allegedly paying ₦900,000 to kidnap aunt

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, for allegedly plotting the kidnap of his aunt, who raised him from childhood.

Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said the suspect paid N900,000 to individuals he believed were kidnappers to carry out the abduction, indicating a premeditated plan.

According to police findings, Destiny lived with his aunt for about 10 years—from age five to 15—before cutting off contact with the family. His alleged involvement in the plot has raised concerns about betrayal within close family relationships.

Edafe described the incident as part of a troubling pattern where individuals target benefactors for financial gain, citing similar cases involving employees and trusted associates.

Investigations revealed the suspect made two payments—an initial N200,000 deposit followed by N700,000—creating a financial trail that helped uncover the plot.

The plan was ultimately foiled when the individuals he contacted turned out not to be kidnappers. Instead, they reported him to authorities, leading to his arrest.

During interrogation, Destiny reportedly confessed but said he could not explain his motive, claiming he did not understand what influenced his actions.

The suspect, a married father of two who runs a haulage and building materials business, allegedly used his earnings to fund the failed plot.

The victim expressed shock upon learning of the plan, noting that Destiny had long distanced himself from the family. She insisted that justice be served.

Police confirmed the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
