Military officers accused of plot to topple Tinubu’s govt set for trial

The Defence headquarters has concluded investigations into disciplinary cases involving 16 officers arrested over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, with those found culpable set to face trial before appropriate military judicial panels.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 26, 2026, the Defence Headquarters said the investigations followed an earlier announcement made in October 2025 regarding the arrest of the officers. The military disclosed that the investigative report has now been forwarded to the relevant superior authority in line with existing regulations.

According to the military, the investigation was comprehensive and conducted in accordance with established military procedures, with careful examination of the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel. The findings reportedly identified some of the officers as facing allegations related to plotting to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu, actions described as inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Armed Forces.

The military said officers with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before the appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.

The AFN emphasized that the measures being taken are strictly disciplinary and form part of its internal mechanisms to maintain order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks. It added that the process would uphold the principles of fairness, accountability, and due process.

The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.

The statement was signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.
