Asari Dokubo, a former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation Niger Delta (MEND) has accused the military of being responsible for about 99% of oil theft in the country.

Asari who disclosed this on Friday after a closed door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the latter’s office at Aso Rock also vowed to ensure oil theft comes to an end in the region.

He said during the closed door meeting, the President did not only pledge to look into the allegations, indicting some Naval commanders but also promised to take actions that would bring an end to the act which the President described as shameful.

The Niger Delta leader said cabals engaged in oil theft operate from Abuja and that together with his boys from the Niger Delta region, he will match their forces and expose them, adding that he trust’s the President to send those found guilty to Kuje Prison.

The former leader of militants in the region said it is unfortunate that citizens in the Niger Delta region who do not have the means to perpetrate these henious crimes against humanity are usually the accused.

He said the Niger Delta people are mere victims as the criminals engaged in this sohisticated crime of oil theft have deprived the people of their means of livelihood.

Asides Dokubo, President Tinubu had also met with other prominent figures from the Niger Delta region to discuss modalities on how to deal with oil theft.

The President last week met with Chief Timi Alaibe, the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Dr Dr Dakuku Peterside, the former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA)

Reiterating his stand on same issue, the President had in a recent meeting with security chiefs in the country charged them to put in efforts in the fight against oil theft, as it will not be tolerated in his administration.
