Commercial drivers and other motorists on Saturday ignored the restriction of movement order issued by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and security authorities, as vehicular activities continued across several parts of the FCT.
Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored the situation reported that commercial buses, tricycles and motorcycles were actively conveying passengers in areas such as Airport Road, Jikwoyi, Nyanya, Kuje, Gwagwalada and parts of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). No barricades were observed in most of these locations.
However, along the Kubwa–Nyanya highway, security operatives mounted roadblocks using patrol vehicles, compelling motorists to take one-way routes in an apparent attempt to bypass the restrictions.
While vehicular movement persisted, many businesses remained shut across the FCT, with shops largely under lock and key. Nonetheless, some shop owners, laundry operators and Point of Sale (POS) service providers opened for business in parts of Airport Road.
Meanwhile, election activities commenced gradually in some areas. At about 8:10 a.m., electoral materials were seen being transported from the Kuje Central Distribution Centre at Science Primary School to designated polling units within the area council.
In Aleyita, along Airport Road, polling units were largely deserted, with only a few security personnel present and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yet to arrive as of early morning.
By 8:26 a.m., only five voters had shown up at one polling centre, including two political party agents. One of the voters, Mr Andrew James, said he arrived at 7:00 a.m. but was disappointed that voting had not commenced due to the absence of INEC officials. He noted that six polling units in the community had been merged at LEA Primary School, Aleyita, for convenience.
Similarly, voting had not started at Pilot Science Primary School in Kwali as of 8:33 a.m., although INEC officials were seen briefing party agents on election procedures.
