‘My brother’s keeper’: Joshua visits relatives of friends lost in tragic accident

Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has made his first public comment since the tragic car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

Joshua, who survived the crash, shared a photo on social media as he prepared for the funeral rites of the deceased, scheduled to take place on Sunday at a mosque in London. In the image, the boxer is seen seated with his mother and family members of the victims, with one person holding a framed photograph of Ghami. He captioned the post simply: “My Brother’s Keeper.”

The phrase, widely understood as a commitment to care and responsibility for others, marked Joshua’s first public reaction since the accident.

The two-time heavyweight world champion was a passenger in a black Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at Makun, Ogun State. Ghami, Joshua’s strength coach, and Ayodele, his personal trainer, both died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Joshua returned to the United Kingdom on Friday night, arriving at London Stansted Airport, and has since been recuperating at his residence while also visiting the families of the deceased ahead of the burial.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing. The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 47, has been charged with dangerous driving, among other offences, and was granted bail by a court in Ogun State. He pleaded not guilty, claiming the crash was caused by brake failure.

Joshua’s mother had earlier travelled to Nigeria to be by his side while he received treatment following the incident. Although authorities initially described his injuries as minor, concerns have been raised within his camp about the possible extent of the damage, with implications for his boxing career still unclear.

The funeral prayers for Ghami and Ayodele are expected to take place later on Sunday in London, bringing together family members, friends and members of the boxing community to mourn the pair.
