The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed reports claiming that the Federal Government directed it to halt enforcement against sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic products, describing the claim as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Agency said it has received no formal communication from the Federal Government instructing it to suspend regulatory or enforcement actions on sachet alcohol products.
“The said publication is false, misleading, and does not reflect any official communication received by the Agency from the Federal Government,” NAFDAC stated.
The Agency emphasised that it operates strictly within its statutory mandate and in line with duly communicated government policies, noting that all enforcement actions remain guided by existing laws and regulatory frameworks.
“At no time has the Agency received any formal directive ordering the suspension of its regulatory or enforcement activities in respect of sachet alcohol products,” Adeyeye said.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring compliance in the food and beverage sector, stressing that any policy shift affecting national regulatory actions would be communicated through official government channels.
The Agency also warned against the circulation of unverified reports, cautioning that such information could create unnecessary public anxiety, economic uncertainty, and confusion about government policy.
NAFDAC urged the public, industry stakeholders, and the media to disregard the false report and rely solely on information released through its official platforms and authorised government communication channels.
The clarification comes amid continued regulatory scrutiny of sachet alcohol products, which remain a subject of public health concern due to their accessibility and potential for abuse, especially among young people.
