The Nigerian female team defeated her opponent to earn her team’s first victory of the tournament and the sixth victory overall in the Women’s World Cup’s history.
The nine-time African champions have only won four games in the competition’s history, according to reports, two of which came in 1999 (against North Korea and Denmark), one in 2011 (against Canada), and one in 2019 — where they also defeated North Korea 2-0.
With the victory, the Super Falcon’s chances of moving on to the round of 16 have increased after Canada defeated Ireland 2-1 on Wednesday.
The Falcons earned a commendable point in their tournament debut by showcasing their defensive skills, which included custodian Chiamaka Nnadozie saving a penalty.
Australia won their only previous encounter at the Women’s World Cup in 2015 with a score of 2-0.
