Nigeria has recorded a major diplomatic success at the 27th Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) held in Doha, Qatar, with the election of Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Managing Director of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), as the new Secretary-General of the global gas body.
In the same meeting, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, was also elected as President of the 2026 GECF Ministerial Meeting — marking a rare dual recognition of Nigeria’s leadership in the international gas industry.
Reacting to the development, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as “a historic diplomatic achievement” that underscores the success of the administration’s proactive foreign policy and strategic engagement in global energy diplomacy.
Ambassador Tuggar attributed the achievement to sustained diplomatic efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s missions across GECF member states, which actively lobbied and campaigned for Nigeria’s candidature.
He disclosed that Nigeria’s missions were mobilized to engage voting members, with the process reinforced through high-level engagements at major international summits, including the BRICS Summit in Brazil and the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
The Minister also commended the crucial political backing provided by President Tinubu, which he said ensured widespread support for Nigeria’s candidates.
Describing the twin victories as “a win not only for Nigeria but for Africa’s collective voice in global energy governance,” Ambassador Tuggar praised Dr. Mshelbila and Minister Ekpo for their competence and leadership, expressing confidence that they will strengthen the GECF’s role in shaping the global energy transition and promoting equitable resource management.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to aligning Nigeria’s foreign policy with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at enhancing the country’s global standing and ensuring that diplomacy continues to deliver concrete benefits to Nigerian citizens.
