Northern politicians not the only politicians behind coalition against Tinubu – Ex-Presidential political adviser

In a recent interview television appearance,’ Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former political adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima, firmly dismissed claims that northern politicians are orchestrating a coalition against the current administration. Instead, he encouraged coalition leaders to work behind the scenes to facilitate a generational shift in Nigerian politics.

The coalition, prominently led by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, has sparked debate regarding northern political alliances in response to southern leadership. Baba-Ahmed noted that political coalitions are not exclusive to northern leaders and highlighted the involvement of several southern figures in the opposition’s efforts.

“All coalitions in Nigeria have included southerners,” Baba-Ahmed stated, citing key players like Governor Amaechi and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as integral to the discussions. He emphasized that alliances are a common political strategy in Nigeria, recalling how the coalition that toppled former President Goodluck Jonathan was shaped with significant southern participation, including the present-day President Tinubu.

Furthermore, Baba-Ahmed identified internal divisions within the coalition and criticized its prominent members for seeking leadership roles rather than supporting a new generation of political figures. He argued that Nigerians deserve leaders who offer hope and a break from the political status quo, rather than those with longstanding political legacies.

“Nigerians need fresh perspectives that can inspire trust and represent a genuine departure from the current governance model,” Baba-Ahmed remarked, insisting that the coalition should focus on nurturing new political talent for the future.
