Obi’s associate Aisha Yesufu withdraws from FCT senate race

Popular activist and ally of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Yesufu announced her withdrawal on Friday, weeks after declaring interest in the 2027 FCT Senate seat following her defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC.

She had previously said her decision to contest was inspired by the leadership experience she gained while in the ADC.

Her withdrawal follows speculations that the party had settled for another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who had reportedly been with the party before Yesufu joined.

In a statement, the activist disclosed that the NDC had decided not to conduct primaries for the FCT senatorial position, effectively ending her ambition for the seat.

“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives,” she stated.

Despite stepping down from the race, Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and focus on the broader political goal ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“I urge each and everyone of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she said.

She also appreciated supporters for their commitment to the “#AishaForSenate” campaign project.

Yesufu further disclosed that she would continue engaging with residents across the six area councils of the FCT in the coming weeks as part of efforts to promote what she described as a “Better FCT.”
