Nigeria’s youngest lawmaker, Hon. Rasheed Kashamu, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kashamu, who represents Ijebu North I State Constituency in the Ogun State House of Assembly and serves as Deputy Minority Whip, announced his decision through a letter read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
In the letter, the 28-year-old legislator said his decision was informed by persistent internal crises within the PDP, including factional disputes at the national level and leadership challenges in Ogun State.
He also cited pressure and advice from his constituents, explaining that he did not want Ijebu North to suffer politically as a result of instability within his former party.
According to Kashamu, he consulted widely with stakeholders across his constituency—traditional rulers, party leaders and supporters—who unanimously endorsed his defection.
The lawmaker said his move was aimed at aligning with the progressive direction of the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s ISEYA agenda, as well as supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
He disclosed that he had officially joined the APC at his Oke-Sopen ward in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area, alongside a large number of his supporters from across the constituency.
Kashamu was formally received into the APC fold by his colleagues in the House, led by the Speaker, with his wife, uncle and other well-wishers present at the plenary.
