Onor joins PDP presidential race, promises party revival

A former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Sandy Ojang Onor, has officially entered the party’s 2027 presidential race after purchasing the nomination form.

Speaking at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja on Saturday, Onor said his decision followed widespread calls from party stakeholders and supporters across the country. He expressed strong belief in the PDP’s capacity to reclaim national leadership, describing it as a “legacy institution” that has significantly shaped Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Onor, who represented Cross River Central Senatorial District in the Senate from 2019 to 2023, acknowledged recent internal challenges within the party but maintained that it has emerged stronger and more united. He pledged to build on that progress and reposition the PDP for greater national impact if given the mandate.

He also highlighted the party’s track record of democratic values, including its willingness to concede defeat in the interest of national stability, adding that the PDP is poised to surpass its past achievements.

Responding, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed welcomed Onor’s ambition and assured him of a fair and transparent primary process, reiterating the party’s commitment to internal democracy ahead of the 2027 elections.
